Shamrock: Disruptive Innovator

"A disruptive innovation is an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market leaders and alliances. The term was defined and phenomenon analyzed by Clayton M. Christensen beginning in 1995." Wikipedia

Yesterday, I was scrolling thru my Facebook wall, when I saw this video popped up on my wall that has been shared by a few friends. So, inquisitively I clicked it and realized that it was a new Belizean female artist. New to me anyways; I have never heard of her since yesterday. According to her Facebook page, which has 2,500 likes, she launched in 2014 and released a hit song in July of that year, entitled "Belize da fi we" which is still widely played on tv and radio.

Some may say I have been living under a rock, because I have never heard the song "Belize da fi we", and I have to admit, I have not listened to too much Belizean music artists. The reason for this, is that I never consider many Belizean music artist to bring a unique Belizean style that we can call our own, when it comes to popular music genres. Most of the artist I hear try too much to sound like Jamaican artists, which there is nothing wrong with that, however, I just don't consider it unique to our culture, and can't call it our own.

Now, Shamrock seems to be a Disruptive Innovator. From my observation, she understands her demographic and realized the power of social media and has been utilizing it quite effectively. To have over 2,500 likes/followers on Facebook is not an easy feat in Belize. Also, I like the non-studio style music video of "Chronic" it shows that she can be creative with the tools at hand, and this lets her look far more authentic, because she is not depending on high quality imaging, but depending on her talent. And she pulled it off successfully, in my humble opinion.

Shamrock, I highly commend your innovation and public relations skills. I think you and Mr. Program bring that uniqueness to Belizean music, in popular genres such as rap, hip hop, danceall, reggae that makes it our own; the same way Latinos took Reggae and created Reggaeton and made it their own.

I have two teeny tiny recommendations:

  1. Open a free YouTube Channel and post your music videos there as well. YouTube is by far the most popular video sharing service in the world. This will help your fans share your videos even further and wider.

  2. Build yourself a free website at Wix.com. They have great templates now to help music artists sell their music directly from their website.
